Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立清華大學 === 語言學系 === 84 === This thesis is a synchronic study of the nature of V-O compounds in Taiwan Southern Min (henceforth TSM). We will discuss V-O compounds in TSM from the phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic points of view. Our discussion benefits from modern linguistic theories in general and morphological theories in particular. There are five chapters in this thesis. In Chapter 1, we first introduce some linguistic basic concepts to readers such as sign, morpheme, word and compounding and affixation. Next, we present a literature review of previous studies on compounds and V-O compounds in Mandarin and TSM. In Chapter 2, following Chao''''s framework, we explore the essence of compounds and V-O compounds and attempt to find a satisfactory answer to the question "What is the difference between compounds and phrases?" A small-scale survey is done to look at the syntactic property of TSM V-O compounds. In Chapter 3 and 4, various dimensions of V-O compounds in TSM are presented. Chapter 3 deals with the phonological, morphological and syntactic phenomen of V-O compounds in TSM. We will analyze their internal structure, and external function and furthermore explore TSM V-O compounds in terms of the theories of Incorporation and Feature Percolation Conventions. Chapter 4 presents various thematic roles of objects in TSM V-O compounds. We will show these thematic relationships from two directions. One is that thematic roles are the basis on which V-O compounds are shown and another is that verbs are the basis on which V-O compounds are shown. The final chapter concludes the thesis.
