It was found that with the recycle mo-dule design , the flow rate of fluid in the system was increased andthe overall mass transfer rate was thus augmented. Further , the con-centration of the aqueous solution at the inlet was diluted due tothe effect of recycle , leading to improved separation. Considerableimprovement in separation was obtained with the use of recycle, especially under the high reflux ratio. Experiments for solventextraction of acetic acid from aqueous solution by means of methylisobutyl ketone were carried out in a flat-plate microporousmembrane module both with and without recycle. It was found thatthe overall mass transfer coefficient increases scarcely with theflow rate of aqueous solution.
