Description
Summary:碩士 === 元智工學院 === 化學工程學系 === 84 === Low-molecular-weight liquid crystals which exhibit chiral smectic C phase have been widely because of their ferroelectric properties and the electroopticeffects of fast switching speed. These novel characterics make ferroelectric liquid crystals( FLCs) particularly suitable for electrooptic applications, suchas to display and light vavle devices. Recently, side-chain liquid crystalline polymers have attracted considerableinterest owing to combine the electrooptic properties of liquid crystals withthe excellect mechanical characterics and processability of polymeric materials. This bifunctional property can be applied for displays and information storage. In this paper, we report the characterics of SSFLC in a ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymer(FLCP). A new bistable electrooptic effect based on light scattering of FLCP is reported. At low temperature in the SmC* phase, it was demonstrated for the first timethat both the transparent and opaque states could be maintained after removing the applied voltage. This is a new bistable electrooptic effect in FLCP. It wasconfirmed from polarized microscopic observation that the opaque state of thiselectrooptic effect during and after the reported polarity reversal was causedby the induced helicoidal structure.
