The objective is to investigatethe electrical characteristics of the typical maintenance-free lead-acidbattery. Based on the characteristics, we develop a 500W charger and discharger. Proper compensators are designed for governing their dynamics so that the overall system can have good stability margin. In addition, protection circuits, such as over current protection, over temperatureprotection and over voltage protection, are considered and designed in toprevent the system from damage during abnormal operation. The charger anddischarger integrated with the lighting system, is described in detail. Thecomputer simulations and experimental results are provided to verify the theoretical discussions.
