The metal-halide lamps exhibit a negative dynamic resistance phenomenon. Thus, it is essential to place some form of current limiting devices in series with the lamp. A lamp ballast is installed to provide a suitable starting voltage and then limit lamp current flow during steady state operation. A driven half-bridge series resonant inverter using PWM controller TL494 is implemented and the circuit parameters are selected according to the characteristics of the metal-halide lamp. The low-frequency and high-frequency characteristics of metal-halide lamps are discussed. Finally the experimental results are presented to verify theoretical predictions and discussions.
