The 120 dyad stroke patients and their primary caregivers dischaged from Kaohiung Medical College hospital and Kaoshiung Yuan''s General Hospital in 1995 and Kaoshiung Municipal Ta Tung hospital between 1994 and 1995 were included .The questionnaire included(1) personal characteristics;(2)caregiving burdens scale;(3)social support scale;(4)coping style score ;(5)activities of daily living scale;(6)cognitive capacity scale;(7)behavioral problem scale. Reliability of this questionnire was assessed by Cronbach''s alpha & test-retest reliability ;validty was assessed by content validity & factor analysis .SPSS for windows was used for data entry and analysis.Analysis methods descriptive statistic, univariate analysis, pearson correlation and heirarchical regression analysis . The finding were as follows:(1)The highest burdens score of the primary caregivers was the social burdens score score, and the lowest was the financial burdens score.(2) The primary caregivers had higher whole burden score when the stroke patients with younger age , lower score on living abilitiy, the severe behavioral problems and lower cognitive capacity .(3)The primary caregivers, who were lower educational level ,patient''s spouse and perceived worse health status after taking care of the patient, had higher whole burden score.(4)The highest social support score of the primary caregivers was the emotional support score , and the lowest was the information support score. (5)The highest coping style score ofthe primary caregivers was the problem-solving coping style score ,and the lowest was the evasive-emotive coping style score. (6) The primary caregivers of the female stroke patients were more likely to adopt the problem-solving coping style.(7) The primary caregivers of the stroke patients with severe behavioral problems were more likely to adopt evasive-emotive coping style. (8)The primary caregivers ,who were males ; with mid to high educational level;or mid to high socioecnomic status ;patient''s adult children ; and perceived health status without change after taking care of the patient, were more likely to adopt problem-solving coping style .(9)The primary caregive, who were with lower educational level , or the patient''s spouse, and percevied wrose health status after taking care of the patient , were more likely to adopt to the evasive-emotive coping style. (10)The primary caregivers, who were with higher educational level , or were the patient''s adult children, andperceived health status without change after taking care of the patient , were more likely to adopt change of cognitive-thinking coping style .(11)Primary caregivers'' whole burden score were negatively correlated with their problem-solving coping style score, and postively correlated with evasive-emotive coping style score significantly .(12)Primary caregivers'' social support scorewere positively correlated with their problem-solving coping style score and the change of cognitive-thinking coping style score , and negatively correlated with evasive-emotive coping style score significantly .(13)Primary caregivers'' educational level and social support were significant predictors of their adoption of problem-solving coping style.(14)Primary caregivers'' educationallevel and whole burdens were significant predictors of their adoption of their adoption of evasive-emotive coping style. (15)The primary caregivers'' perception of health status change after taking care of the patient was a significant predictor of their adoption of change cognitive-thinking coping style. Results of this research can assist community health nurses in providing adequate nursing care to primary caregivers, in order to help caregivers to takeadequate coping style , and make a better adjustment in life to obtain a good quality of home care.
