flexible manufacturing on Surface Mounting Technology (SMT),
the production system of a firm in SMT industry is
analyzed. The main problem discovered is the excessively long
idle time of many workstations due to the large difference of
operating time between workstations.Besides, the production
system cannot be integrated because it has operators moving
materials instead of using automatic material handling
system. About these problems, operation rationalization
isadopted first. Then a Flexible Manufacturing Cell(FMC) is
developedon the base of Group Technology(GT). With computer
simulation using SLAMⅡ,the new production modle is proved
better in eliminating thebottlenecks, solving the problem of
insufficient capacity, reducingthe work-in-process inventory,and
enhance manufacturing flexibilty.
