碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 資訊科學研究所 === 85 === Mobile devices such as a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a
notebook computer, have the needed mobility and portability for
mobile users to connect to the Internet via wireless network.
However, the wireless network has a lower bandwidth, lower
transmission speed and higher cost. In addition, mobile devices
have lower computing power, smaller memory and short battery
life. As a result, the mobile device and wireless link might
not be able to sustain the large among of unprocessed data seen
on the current computing paradigm. In this thesis, a new
computing paradigm, mobile agent, is developed to address the
aforementioned issues of mobile computing. A mobile agent can
act on behalf of the user, move to different hosts for execution
to carry out the assigned task. In a mobile computing
environment, after establishing a connection to the remote
server and making a request to launch a mobile agent, the user
can then disconnect from the fixed network. The user can check
the results when the mobile agent has carried out the task. In
this paradigm, the user does not need to maintain the connection
to the remote server and the mobile device does not need to have
large computing power. In addition, shorter communication
between the mobile device and remote server can reduce the cost.
Therefore, the mobile agent architecture is well-suited for
mobile computing environment. Our objective is to design a
communication protocol and system architecture for mobile
agents. A prototype is also implemented to demonstrate the
feasibility of this approach.
