Customers pay for commerce transaction; merchant acquire payment through financial clearing. All are the same as in the real-world commerce. Because thosefinancial transactions involve value exchange, system designers must guarenteecorrectness of transaction processing, meet the demands for privacy, and preventattacks from intruders. There are three types of payment systems:(1)Credit Card,(2)Cash-like, and (3)Account-based. In this thesis, the author provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art study on on-line payment systems. The author has surveyed many recent systems:SET, CyberCash, NetCash, CAFE, NetBil, SNPP, FSTC, Netcheque,MPTP, Millicent, Globe ID, iKP, SEMPER,and others. The author offerscomments on these systems from both societal and technical perspectives.
