manufacturing sector in the past decade. This concept not only
helps to reduce considerable production costs in the
manufacturing process but also enables the quality management
system inside the organization to evolve in terms of greater
efficiency and effectiveness. This competitiveness edge
demonstrated by the quality costing concept has also attracted
the attention of the construction industry in recent years.
Specifically, quality differentiation of construction products
is one of the key issues for practitioners in the construction
sector for business survival. The main purpose of this paper is
to identify what have been learned in other sectors and to
attempt to incorporate this know-how into the construction
firms. The paper first introduces the main elements of the
concept. Then, according to the characteristics of construction
projects, the framework for establishing the quality costing
system for construction firms at the project level is presented.
Also, based on the interviews with general contractors, the
feasibility of this framework is reasoned. Finally, some
preliminary conclusions are given.
