languages in John Updike's Rabbit, Run by basing on Bakhtin's
theory about heteroglossia. And a more innovative and profound
interpretation is expected through employing this theory.
Bakhtin thinks through various channels such as the speeches of
the characters and genre, languages interrelate with one
another, which forms the heteroglossia in the novel. Besides,
thanks to the nature of language, comprising the centripetal
forces and centrifugal forces, the confrontations between
diverse social ideologies are consequently presented in the
literary works. Therefore, the languages in the novel not only
reveal the author's excellent skills but also the overall
picture of the social, cultural and historical background. The
first chapter of the thesis includes the characteristics of
Rabbit, Run,the critical essays concerning this book and the
reasons for me to apply Bakhtin's theory. The second chapter
introduces the theory about heteroglossia. The third is
designed to analyze the heteroglot phenomena occurring in the
languages of the novel and the refracted authorial intentions.
The forth chapter deals with the various social ideologies
contained in the languages and explores the social problems
hidden behind those ideologies. The fifth chapter summarize the
main points in this thesis.
