Hence, there are the following questions:1. How does a private speech occur to a preschool child in a classroom?2. What are the functions and contents of the private speeches of preschool children?3. What affects on preschool children''s private speeches? After observations for a semester, three major parts of the findings are concluded as the followings:1. The socialness and privateness of private speeches: children manipulate the instruments, accompanying with speeches to think about and to describe the work at hand, which makes his/her thought more considerable or leads the work ahead. And children will speak out his/her perception in the form of private speeches. They also perform it to ease down the pressure from teachers or peers. Moreover, private speeches not only occur from himself/herself spontaneously, but also infected from peers.2. The contents and functions of private speeches: there are three types of private speeches, "speeches related to works," "speeches not related to works", and "imaginative plays and private speeches" respectively. In "speeches related to works," children describe the work at hand or its problems with private speeches, to resolute the problems or to plan what they should do at the next step. They also speak out classroom regulations and rules of manipulations when they are working. We can see how they perceive and interpret these norms through their private speeches. In "speeches not related to works," children imitate teacher''s speeches, in the form of "…says" and "to describe the feeling with the viewpoints of objects", freely talking with the viewpoints of objects or themselves. This is contrary to which Piaget(1959) had considered private speeches as egocentric in cognition. In "imaginative plays and private speeches," children perform private speeches to create an imaginative context in which they can give new meanings to things in the context, so as to dialogue with imaginative characters and objects.3. Factors that affect on private speeches of preschool children: for the individuality of intellectual/physical development and of the personal characteristics, private speeches perform several modes with individual distinctions. Besides, physical environment during working, attributions of works, and new-comer-or-not all affect on children''s private speeches in many ways. In the areas where works belonging to the same sort, children perform more social speeches because they share the same attribute of works, while they perform more work-describing and self-regulation speeches in the context of more creative working. At the final, there are several suggestions to Montessori educators. Also are there some suggestions to research method and probable topics in the future. Ts''ai Ming-lin 蔡敏玲 1997 學位論文 ; thesis 165 zh-TW
