The characteristic of the fluorescent lamp operating in high- frequency range is explored. The fluorescent lamp is actually an impedance consisting of resistance and capacitance when operates in the high-frequency. The lamp impedance is seriously dependent on the lamp current, the operating frequency, and the lamp voltage. Additionally, a novel soft-starting strategy for smoothly igniting the fluorescent lamp is proposed. A half- bridge series-resonant inverter (HB-SRI) is employed to configure the ballast system. A soft-starting controller(SSC) is presented to preheat the filament of the lamp, which leads to reduce the lamp starting voltage. Mathematical model for description the lamp before and after firing is made. A design example of realizing a 80W ballast is conducted.
