Onthe whole, the most important element is the strests which areused everyday on the way to work, school, shopping, and everyother destinations. It is emergent to improve the streetscape.However, streetscape are ambiguous and lack of sense of placewith urban design in present. Base on the theory of environmentperception, this study intends to explore the linkage betweenidentity and the physical element of streets. Urban designcontrols on the existing elements of streets will make the streets''''''''identity more powerful. This study attempts to find out the correlation between thepsychology of perception and physical environmental. Aquestionnaire viewing 10 streets of Taichung city was given to830 respondents. Semantic differential method was applied invariable measuring. Through the literature review and pilotsurvey, five physical elements of streets including plant, activity,commercial board, and street furniture were obtained. Resultsindicated that thematic, coherence, aesthetic, orientation, andlegibility could be the factors of identity, and it is clear that theexisting physical elements of streets have an effect on streets''''''''identity. To promote the identity of street, this study propose toenhance the streets'''''''' character, control the attitude of buildingshave an effort on greening and manage the landscape of business street.
