approach and documentary analysis, wediscuss if the conception
"security dilemma" under the allliance theory can give
explanation to the German-American alliance in two different
periods in the history after WWII, and try to give examples as
evidence to the explanation. The Thesis concentrates mainly on
points as following:1.The analysis of the conception of
"security dilemma". With discussion of the evolution and the
definition of the security study, we strive to describe the
content of "security dilemma" and then figure out the external
surroundings and internal factors, which help to cause
"security dilemma" both inside and outside the alliance, in the
processes that a state pursue its national security by co-
operating with allied states.2.The analysis the relationship of
the German-American security alliance with "security dilemma".
Using the chart of general survey of "security dilemma" invented
by German scholar Herbert Dittgen, we explain the Relationship
of German-American alliance before and after the Reunification
of Germany by adopting the analytical norms in the chart, and
looking for examples to support the explanation.3.The factors
of Continuation & Change of the German-American alliance. Under
the circumstances of German Reunification and the collapse of
Soviet Union, we analyze the necessity of the continuation of
the German-American alliance, and the factors that cause change
of the originally asymmetric relationship between these two
countries, and then, we prospect the further cooperation in the
future. We derive from the study that, with the gradual growth of
nationalstrength and the desire to promote European integration,
Germany will no longer simply rely on the alliance with United
States, which is not tend to provide protection to Germany
unilaterally as well because ofthe recession of American
national strength. With the growth and decline of the relative
strength of the two states, the factors origin-ally formed from
asymmetric relation of alliance that cause "securitydilemma" is
out of existence. On the contrary, the two countriesshould make
the most of the mutual adventages, and continue the co-operation
on the foundation of mutual trust and benefit.
