During the period of Japanese occupation in 1895-1945, brick
building is one of the major building types in Taiwan. The
aesthistic of brick building facade has an important standing in
the history of Taiwanese architecture. The objectives of this
study are: (1) to identify the characteristics of brick building
styles by systematically analyzing the building facade in this
period, with special focus on the relationship between the style
and the construction system behind it, and (2) to identify the
his--torical meaning of the stylization process by cross-
examining its background factors.
In the first chapter, the issues, the scopes, the objectives and
the method of the study are covered. The process of learning
from foreign brickwork technologies and the characteristics of
the various brick building types in Taiwan are described in the
second chapter. In the third chapter, the construction methods
and characteristics of the four basic parts of the brick
building facade: walls, openings, columns, and parapet gutter
are discussed separately, and existing brick buildings are
surveyed. Inthe fourth chapter, the study focuses on the brick
style buildings in the Japanese occupation period, and the
design, the construction organizations, architectural space,
building facade etc in that period which contributed to the
phenomenon of "brick building stylization" are systematically
analyzed. In the fifth chapter, conclusions are drawn from the
above analysis. The result of various stylization of brick
building types which brought by different construction systems
in the period of Japanese occupa--tion in Taiwan, and their
representative historical meaning are examined and described
respectively.
