碩士 === 國立成功大學 === 都巿計畫學系 === 86 === ABSTRACT The understanding of the current conventional modern square in Taiwan has shown: with severely destruction in the process of economy growth, various sorts of suburban sites of conventional city have come to distinction bar temple gateway. Take temple gateway in Tainan as example, most temple gateways are still retained in the streets and alleys of the central city and are found as the association of all esidents from the same local administration and gathering of all sorts of recreational activities, religion activities, cultural art, politics, business. Small urban square is another word for the temple gateway. The temple gateway landing is the main region in the streets and alleys open to the outside investor, in other words, the temple gateways are the only open space in the streets and alleys save passage of the streets and alleys. No matter in the past or in the current state, temple gateways should provide the function as urban square in the environment with highly intensive inheritance in the streets and alleys. Notwithstanding, we found that the recent activities taken in the temple gateways are not as active as expected, even very deserted and cold concerning space used sometimes, full of cumulated garbage or used as parking lots. It is hard to imagine that low attendance rate occurred in outdoor activity sites in the environment with highly intensive inheritance with the escalating demands toward the activity sites. What leads to this situation? This is the main motive why the research explores the issue profoundly. Hence, we investigate on the current use of temple gateways through two aspects, quality of practical environment and users'' demand. Hope to come to clear understanding of the issue, examine the cause of low attendance rate and infective of the use of temple gateway and quality of practical environment, re-examine the role and historical background of traditional temple gateway, and discuss the issue and strategy of facility and maintenance administration of traditional temple gateway, in order to relocate the role of temple gateway and provide the direction for improvement in the future. Therefore, the purpose of the research emphasizes on the exploration and analysis of traditional temple gateway in Tainan City. Hope to come to understanding through: 1. Investigation and Discussion on the recent use of traditional temple gateway and practical environment in Tainan. 2. Demand and Degree of Satisfaction of residents'' current use of traditional temple gateway. 3. Via the presented issue and strategy from the result of investigation, hoping to provide the better function of the use of temple gateway and quality of practical environmental in the future. The result of the research: 1. Understanding the feature of current environment of temple gateway in Tainan. 2. Understanding the use condition of temple gateway in Tainan, users'' demand and degree of satisfaction. 3. Focus on the discussion of current use of temple gateway in Tainan, and come to the understanding of the problems occurred on endurance of temple gateway and quality of practical environment concerning space used via the investigation result. 4.
