It is very clear that the bottleneck of overall Internet performance is the router. Therefore, it is very important and urgent to design and develop the next-generation broadband router for improving the overall Internet performance. Recently, several solutions to this issue have been proposed by the communication industry. Label switching technology attracts much more attention than other solutions do. Label switching technology, which uses label swapping mechanism to combine well-conditioned routing information at network layer and high speed transmission ability at data-link layer, can improve the router*s performance. Until now, Ipsilon, Toshiba, Cisco, and IBM proposed their own protocols for label switching, the new and rapid routing approach. These protocols can be categorized by their operation into two groups, data-traffic driven and control-traffic driven. IFMP of Ipsilon and CSR of Toshiba are data-traffic driven; Tag Switch of Cisco and ARIS of IBM are the other. This thesis considers both theory and practice. The detailed analyses of these four different protocols and their advantage and disadvantage will be described in the first part of the thesis. Then, a new label switching technology - Active Label Switching Router (ALSR) will be proposed based on the analyses. In the second part, we will conduct some simulation using software and analyze the IP traffic samples from National Central Library and College of Management, National Central University in order to compare the performance of ALSR and IP switch.
