Growing up in a humble family became a driving force to make him eagerly escape from narrow values to find his ego. He believed each individual his own values and should be respected. He hoped each individual possesses the ability to determine his own future and not to be restricted by other people. His works are very experimental. They are in special structure to challenge fixed art form as well as to question inherent values. They often originate from the language to inspect the limit of main stream ideology to each individual and to awake people to examine everyday life. Handke was a veryversatile writer. In addition to literature, he also worked on movies , music and translation. Not only was he talented, but also a distinctive writer at his times. This thesis is based on Handke''s work "The Lefthanden Woman", a story about a story about a woman who struggles to get away from the old lifestyle to search for her independence. The thesis consists of two parts: the first part is introduction and comment, which has three chapters. In chapter one, the writer of the paper introduces the times and living backgrounds of the author, devellopment of German literature in Austria,author''s main ideology, his shortbiography and his works. The second chapter contains summary and commentary of the story "The Lefthanded Woman". The writer of the thesis first introduces the origin of this story and further analyzes the meaning of the title. In this chapter,she also explores the author''s writing skills, time structure and characters of the story heroes. In chapter three, the translator comments on her own trannlating work. She introduces the principles of translation and problems encountered in translating "The Lefthanded Woman" to show her responsibility to the translating work. The second part of this thesis is thetranslated text of "The Lefthanded Woman". By translating, the translator hopes to present the story to all the readers faithfully and completely. She also hopes to lead all readers to Handke''s world through the commentary in the firstpart of this thesis.
