Therefore, it will be the vital policy in the near future to develop Taiwan as a "Technology Island" of high technology & high added value industries. In the meanwhile, it is important to understand what surroundings the high-tech industries demand. As we know, IC industry is the most symbolic of the high-tech industries. So this thesis takes the example of IC industry to analyze its spatial distribution and location factors. Analyzing with the Location Quotients, it can be found that IC industry is obviously characterized by its agglomeration development, concentrating in some spatial regions or zones, either spontaneous or planned, in Taiwan. In order to explain the location factors of the spatially concentrative phenomena, this thesis takes the procedures as follows: 1.To analyze the developing history and the characteristics of industrial structue to examine if they would have implicated the demand for some special spatial pattern. 2.To survey the firms through questionnaires to evaluate the location factors, learned from in-depth interviews, by Analytical Hierarchy Process Method (A. H.P.) to compare the weighting and prorating in each factor. The conclusion of this thesis is as followed: 1.The firms of design in the upstream of IC industry spontaneously organized themselves in Taipei, the metropolis of Taiwan, to get close to the flow of information and the market of consumption. The firms of fabrication in the middle stream were planned to concentrate in Hsin-Chu Science-based Industrial Park under the influence of governmental policies. Some firms of packaging in the downstream were growing spontaneously in the neighborhood of Hsin-Chu Science-Based Industrial Park to minimize the cost of transportation and communication with fabrication firms; the others clustered in the Export Processing Zones (E.P.Z) for the sake of its developing history. 2.The results of the questionnaire indicate that the common important location factor of each kind of expert firms is the accessibility of technicians, and that only the design firms think it''s important tot get neighboring with the universities and the R&D institutes. 3.The vertical-division of industrial structure contributed the fact that different kind of expert firms settled down in different locations. 4.Among the location factors, some are feasible to integrate at some zones by manmade planning. 5.San-Shia Industrial Park has its location potentiality evaluated by location factors as analyzed in this thesis.
