Afterwards the exchanges in many fields between the Taiwan Strait have become gradually frequent. Proportional to the increasing exchanges, the number of cross-strait marriage also increases constantly. The R.O.C. government adopted the policy of annual quota to regulate this issue. As the general public responded with a request of loosening the restriction of the policy, the government began to study that possibility. This thesis is written by conducting poll studies of the 15582 cross-strait marriage cases which applied for residence in Taiwan before the end of 1996. The approach of systematic random selection is adopted to serve the study. 3976 applicants were selected as questionee, valid respondents numbered 622, which constituted the percentage of valid response of 15.64. The responded questionnaires were then analyzed by SPSS statistical software. This thesis consists of five chapters, twenty paragraphs and sixty-one items. Chapter One illustrates the motive, purpose and approach of the study as well as its area and limit. Chapter Two is focused on the study of overall situation in transnational marriage, cross-strait marriage policy adopted by both governments of the Taiwan Strait, relative document and marriage theories so as to serve as the foundation of this thesis. Chapter Three analyses the responded questionnaires, which includes the analyze of cross-strait marriage structure, the process of selecting spouse, the stability of marriage, how well do the mainland spouses adapt themselves to the life in Taiwan and their satisfaction with the R.O.C.''s policy of regulating cross-strait marriage. Chapter Four discusses such major issues in the cross-strait marriage as PRC''s policy of cross-strait marriage, chain residence, cross-strait marriage, problems caused by mainland spouse in Taiwan. Chapter Five concludes the findings of study and suggests possible solutions. This thesis comes to the following conclusions according to the above-mentioned studies: 1. Male Taiwanese spouses outnumber female Taiwanese spouses with the percentage of 95 to 5. 2. Taiwanese spouse are older than mainland spouses, the phenomenon of "old husband, young wife" exists. 3. 50% of Taiwanese spouses are with the native place of Taiwan and provinces of mainland China, most of their residence is in northern Taiwan, 50% of mainland spouses are with the native place of coastal provinces, they reside in their native place in general. 4. The educational level of Taiwanese spouses is slightly higher than that of their mainland spouses. No remarkable difference is seen. Their average educational level is high school. 5. Most Taiwanese and mainland spouses are labor. The average income of Taiwanese spouses is NT$ 30,000. 70% of mainland spouses have no income in Taiwan. 6. Nearly one-third of Taiwanese spouses are remarried, the figure is almost one-fourth that of the mainland spouses. The percentage of their remarriage is higher than average.
