One of layer 3 switching implmentations, referred to as label switching, is to attach short, fixed length labels to the forwarded packets. Switching entities perform table lookups based on these simple labels, instead of analyzing layer3 headers, to determine where packets should be forwarded. This study inverstigates the architecture of label switching network and its applications. A novel loop prevention algorithm, which employs a port-id list to prevent loops while distributing labels, is proposed. The proposed algorithm applies a constant processing time and a shorter message length. Furthurmore, no global unique identifier is required for switching nodes. For the emerging of virtual private networks and the increasing of mobile users, virtual private network over label switching architecture is also addressed.
