Description
Summary:碩士 === 中山醫學院 === 醫學研究所 === 87 === In Taiwan, motorcycles are the most common means of transportation, and account for 65% of all motor vehicle. Motorcycle accidents cause many fatalities in Taiwan yearly Most serious or fatal motorcycle-related injuries involve the head. Motorcycle helmet use law was passed and enacted in the whole nation on June 1, 1997. In order to measure the effect of prevention of head injuries by helmet among motorcycle riders, head injury cases were collected in Taipei city from June 1,1996 to May 31, 1998. We compared the head injury situations in one year before the law( June 1, 1996 to May 31, 1997) and after implementation of the helmet law(June 1,1997 to May 31,1998) in Taipei city. From June 1,1996 to May 31,1998, We collected 2511 motorcycle-related head cases from 22 teaching hospital in Taipei city. Data analysis showed that after implementation of the law (June 1, 1997 to May31, 1998), the incidence of motorcycle-related head injury decreased by 46.4% when compared to the incidence before the law (June 1,1996 to May 31,1997). After the helmet law, intracranial hematoma, numbers and operation numbers decreased; mortality numbers decreased, too . From these data, it is evident that the helmet law effectively decreased the incidence and severity of motorcycle-related head injury.
