Clusters having interstitial atoms continue to attract considerable attention because they exist novel structural features and bonding properties. Comparing with the numerous reports of encapsulating metal carbonyl clusters, the metal chalcogenides having interstitial atoms are rare. The main theme of this thesis lies in the synthesis and characterization of closed-shell-ion centered CuI cubic clusters containing dialkyl diselenophosphate ligands. Complexes of the type, M8L6(8-X), M = CuI; L = dialkyl diselenophosphate ligand; X = Se2-, Cl-, Br-), can be regarded as guest-host molecules which are relevant to the molecular recognition. A series closed-shell-ion centered cubic clusters of {Cu8(8-Se)[Se2P(OR) 2]6} (R = C2H5 1, C3H7 2, C4H9 3);{Cu8(8-X)[Se2P(OR)2]6}(PF6) (R = C2H5 , C3H7 ; X = Cl-, Br- ) 5、6、7、8 are isolated and fully characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, element analyses, positive FAB mass spectrometries, and NMR(1H, 31P, 77Se) spectroscopies. The {Cu12[Se2P(OC2H5)2]8(P2Se6)} 4 is the first dodecanuclear CuI cluster containing contain mixed selenophosphate ligands.
