However, the mechanism of Al affects on heme-biosynthesis is still unclear. A two-factorial (3×2) design has been planned with combinations of 3 levels of added Al(NO3)3·9 H2O (0,3,30 mg Al/L) and 2 levels of added FeSO4·7 H2O (0,12 mg Fe/L) in the artificial rat’s milk. The neonatal rat pups were randomly divided into six experimental groups, including Low-Al Low-Fe (LALF), Low-Al High-Fe (LAHF), Medium-Al Low-Fe (MALF), Medium-Al High-Fe (MAHF), High-Al Low-Fe (HALF) and High-Al High-Fe (HAHF) groups. The pups (3 days old) were tube-fed with artificial rat’s milk by gastrostomy. Pups were sacrificed at the 16th day after birth. Results indictated that the body weight gain of high Al and medium Al groups at the age of the 12th day are lower than low Al groups. At the age of the 16th day, the body weight gain was significantly influenced by the interaction of dietary Al and Fe contents, average body weight gain in LALF group was significantly higher than MALF and HALF groups, but was similar as high Fe groups. The feed efficiency was significantly affected by the interaction of dietary Al and Fe contents (p<0.05). Compared with other groups, HALF group had the lowest average feed efficiency, while MALF group had the second lowest value. However, there is a similar feed efficiency in animals with high dietary Fe. In addition, hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct) and serum iron were significantly influenced by the interaction of dietary Al level. compared with other groups. HALF group had the lowest values of Hb, Hct and serum iron (p<0.05). There was no significant difference of all anemia-related parameters among 3 high dietary Fe groups. In low Fe groups, the Aminolaevulinic acid synthetase, Aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase and Heme Oxygenase were significantly influenced by the dietary Al (p<0.05). This phenomenon was not shown in high dietary Fe condition. cytochrome P-450 activity was decreased with increasing of dietary Al, while the serum Al and liver Al were increased with increasing of dietary Al. Therefore, high dietary Al may retard the growth, and cause anemia in gastrostomy tube-fed pups.
