Therefore a thorough understanding of phase behavior between CO2 and water (or seawater) at the deep sea conditions (high pressure and low temperature) should be helpful in evaluating the feasibility of storing CO2 in the ocean. The laboratory of the Chemical Engineering Department of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has 2 sets of high pressure PVT equipment. At the persuasion of Dr. Edward T.S. Huang in 1995, Unocal Corporation of USA donated the equipment to NCKU. The equipment was designed for experiments at temperatures above the room temperature. In this study, the PVT equipment was utilized to measure the CO2 solubility in water above the room temperatures. The measured data showed a good agreement with those published in the literature. This indicates that with minor modifications to enable the equipment for operation at temperatures below room temperature, it can be utilized to measure the experimental data required for evaluation of the idea of deep-sea disposal of CO2. A mechanism for the interfacial mass-transfer of carbon dioxide through liquid CO2-water is modified. This modified model assorts with literature data can reasonably predict dissolution rates of CO2 droplet in the water. And proving this model is suited to force convection in the CO2 hydrate formation region. Otherwise, it can be used to explain the relationship between dissolution rates and temperature by a kinetic model of hydrate formation of the literature. The results of this research and the extensive collection of literature papers regarding this subject should be very helpful in the future research work on the deep-sea storage of CO2.
