Currently, VRML supports sophisticated multimedia presentations and user interactions and thereby gradually become the most popular 3D objects description language on Internet. However, various problems remain in VRML. First, the users are required to download the whole 3D scene before the navigation. Due to the vast data amount of typical 3D objects, the downloading time is thereby intolerable in a low-bandwidth network environment. Second, current VRML technology only supports single-user navigation and interaction. The lack of a “collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) standard” in VRML has hinder the development of VRML-based multi-user application. On the hope to construct a multi-user 3D virtual butterfly ecosystem on the Internet. in this thesis we present our design of a VRML-based “shared collaborative virtual environments”.
