All 28 rectangular beams were tested. The spelling area is noted by using the characteristics that Phenolphthalein liquid turns red in alkalinity due to concrete itself. The test results revealed that the spelling of reinforced concrete beam would affect the torsion strength. The thickness of concrete cover definitely affected the spelling behavior of beams. The spelling of concrete cover would change the model applied to the torsion beams. The beams with less concrete cover are suited to be predicted by softening space truss model. In contrast, to some extent, Diagonal Compression Field will predict torsion strength of beams with thicker concrete cover. In 1995 ACI code, the design of reinforced concrete beams for torsion is based on space truss model. The thickness of concrete cover is not considered in the code.
