ATM networks could be used as a backbone network for the TCP/IP packets. This research will propose a scheme that modifies the EPRCA scheme to get better performance for TCP over ABR. Among five classes of ATM services, ABR service is a good choice for transmitted TCP/IP traffic. The slow-start phase of TCP and its relationship with initial rate are also analyzed and studied. Chapter 1 introduces to the present network configuration and the motivation for this paper. Chapter 2 introduces the EPRCA scheme and the flow control scheme of TCP, including Tahoe TCP, Reno TCP, New Reno TCP, and SACK TCP. Chapter 3 introduces the MEPRCA scheme. In chapter 3 and chapter 4, we verify this scheme by mathematical methods and simulations. In addition, we make two simulations of different topologies for the MEPRCA scheme to prove its better performance. Finally, we make conclusions and a suggestion to the TCP initial window is also discussed in chapter 5.
