Accordingly, with every increase of the branch line, the cost of building and operating the rapid transit system will become higher and less economical. On the other hand, if the length of branch line is not long enough, it will be impossible for the rapid transit system to reach the minimum passenger carriage point without a loss. This study aims at analyzing related factors, the purposes of services and the functions of MRT branch line, for two different operation modes (shuttle and through routes). The analytical mathematical algorithm was employed to find the optimal length of a branch line. Based on optimal social welfare, the optimal length of branch line was used as guideline to whether of branch line feasibility. From the social welfare point of view, the warrant for constructing a branch line is to optimize the social-welfare objective function, the length of a branch line should be a positive value and larger the main line service area, the social welfare value should be positive.
