The on-machine coating can reduce the cost, but it may sacrifice the changeability of the operation, and the quality of coated paper is usually worse than the coated paper of off-machine because the coating weight cannot be increased for the on-machine paper. The objective of this research was to improve runnability and printability of the on-machine coating. In recent years, the pigments of the color change very fast, such as the titanium dioxide was replaced by plastic pigment. The results showed as the particle size of the plastic pigment decreasing, the paper brightness, opacity, gloss, and dry pick resistance increasing and the roughness decreasing. Base on the hollow and solid types, the paper performance of the hollow type plastic pigment is better than the solid type, especially in opacity, gloss and printing gloss. The water resistance, rheology of the color, dry pick resistance and koda ink can be promoted by the co-binder and the water resistance of soy protein is better than the hydroxyethyl cellulose, which is one type of rheology modifiers. The structure of coating layer also can be improved by soy protein, and the Koda Ink is also increased.
