Epoxy resin had wide applications on adhesion, sealant, coating and etc. However, solvent is unavoidable for its applications, especially on the high epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) resin. The carboxylic acid was introduced into the high EEW epoxy resin (>250) by a half-esterification of maleic anhydride or succinic anhydride on its hydroxy groups. The self-emulsified aqueous-based epoxy resin was resulted after the neutralization of its carboxylic acid with triethylamine. This prepared self-emulsified epoxy resin could be blended with conventional aqueous-based PU dispersion in various ratios and resulted in a hybridized polymer formation. Furthermore, aqueous-based epoxy resin and its hybridized polymer were cured with a multi-aziridinyl curing agent, respectively.
