It not only increases the communication efficiency between man and computer, but also diversifies everyone’s daily life and viewing windows to the world. Besides text, we usually add audio, image, and video to our presentations in order to have a vivid ventilation. For this reason, there are many multimedia presentation systems which help users to design their presentation. However, multimedia applications usually contain a number of resources to be presented sequentially or concurrently. Moreover, many of these resources occupy period of time and screen space. So we argue that, relations among temporal intervals can be used to model time-dependent objects, and all spatio-temporal relations among the objects can be derived by algebraic computing. With this concept, we develop a multimedia presentation system to help user design their presentation more easily. Firstly, an extension of Allen’s Table13, named temporal transitive closure table(Table29) which consists of the compositions of 29 temporal relation sets, can be calculated. And an interval-based temporal relation algebraic system is constructed. Thus, we propagate the time constraints of arbitrary two objects across long distances n by linear time. A set of algorithms is proposed to derive reasonable relations between intervals. Possible conflicts in the user specification are detected and eliminated. Besides deriving temporal relations, the algorithms are extended for time-based media in an arbitrary n-dimensional space. The contributions of these algorithms and the interval algebraic system can be used to process the temporal knowledge query, and to generate the schedule and layout of multimedia presentations. Another character of this multimedia presentation system is having a graphic user interface. User can use multimedia resources browser to browse the contents of multimedia resources and select the resources that will be presented. After selecting, rely on temporal and spatial specification editor to arrange schedule and layout of the presentation. Besides, our system is designed with quantitative and qualitative reasoning.
