They might stay there for a long time and accumulate through tidal circulations. What will the extra openings do to enhance the self-cleaning ability is of much interesting. Numerical simulation techniques are utilized to evalute the pollution deminishing effect in a harbor under various opening conditions Finally, Taichung Harbor is chosen as a case study. The tidal flactuation of southern part of the harbor was estimated by calculating the tidal transport velocity from the port entrance in the north. Hydrodynamic model was applied first to simulate the elevation and current velocity inside the port. Then, a dispersion model was adapted to trace the pollutant in the port. Four kinds of opening conditions were proposed to discuss the enhancing ability of dispersion in the harbor which are:small-scale holes、middle-scale holes、middle-scale openings and large-scale openings. Two different positions of middle-scale holes were also compared. It was found that the self-cleaning ability of Taichung Harbor could be greatly enhanced by extra openings in the south part of the basin. The results showed that not the larger opening receive the better dispersion effect. The middle-scale opening was found to have better improvement over small-scale holes and middle-scale holes.
