(Acanthaceae). Compounds 4-8, cilinaphthol A (12), heliobuphthalmin (13) and chinensinaphthol (14) isolated from the other species of Justicia, were screened for anti-inflammatory activity. The results indicated that most of lignans didn''t show significant inhibitory effects on activation of mast cells, neutrophils, and RAW 264.7 cells stimulated by various inducers. Compound 5 and 12 showed significant inhibitory effects on TNF-α formation from N9 cells stimulated with LPS/IFN-γ. The present study suggested that the inhibition of TNF-αformation by 5 and 12 in microglial cells might be valuable in the therapeutic treatment or prevention of certain central as well as peripheral disease associated with increased TNF-α production.
