Photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll a fluorescence (Fv/Fm), soluble proteins, chlorophylls, carotenoids, total solutes, carbohydrates, and potassium ion content (K+) were determined over Sep 1998 to Apr 2000. Photosynthetic rate was fluctuation with seasonal change, basically lower in winter and higher in summer except for Y. niitakayamensis, and showed significant correlation with air-temperature. It also indicated that photoinhibition also caused by low temperature in winter with Fv/Fm decrease in all 5 tested species. Soluble proteins content in P. morrisonicola had a positive correlation with air temperature while Y. niitakayamensis and C4 plant M. transmorrisonensis showed negative correlations. Whereas changes in pigments content varied among species. Osmoprotection was also shown in total solutes and soluble carbohydrates increase in P. morrisonicola, Y. niitakaya-mensis, and M. transmorri-sonensis in cold period. A multiple regression analytic method was used to estimate decreases of photosynthetic rate caused by other physiological damages. From the stepwise multiple regression analysis, it showed that photosynthetic rate of P. morrisonicola and M. transmorrisonensis had strongest correlation to monthly mean air- temperature before determination, and others showed correlate to weekly mean air-temperature before determination. From the above results, it was concluded that decreases of photosynthetic rate of Tataka plants are due to cold wave in winter which cause dissimilar damages among species and recover with different time interval at warm spring. Different patterns of physiological characteristic change show that different strategy among species, and this investigation can also make a link to distribution of conifers in Taiwan.
