The comparison of various Pmax studies are difficult due to inconsistency in the method of measurement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the measurement reliability of Pmax and to provide data to suggest a standardization model. The Pmax measurement variances and their differences between subjects of different physical ability were also examined. Eight athletes (19.4±0.7 (M±SD) yr in age, 173.5±6.2 cm in height, and 70.6±11.2 kg in weight) and 6 non-athletes (20.3±1.2yr, 174.0±3.8 cm, and 61.7±5.6 kg) were measured on 3 separate days with 10 trials each after mastering of the Pmax manoeuvres. The error variance components and generalizability coefficients for decision study of the maximum static expiratory pressure (PE max) and maximum static inspiratory pressure (PI max) were examined by using generalizability theory. The results showed that (1) main source of variance lied in the interaction between subjects and measurement days; (2) this variance on PE max was lower in athletes (6.4%) than in non-athletes (8.1%), while similar on PI max measurement (19.3% versus 19.6%); (3) no significant (p>0.05) differences were found in the highest PE max or PI max values among days in both groups; (4) considerable increase of reliability was found if more than 3 trials are performed for 2 measurement days. Based on the relatively small sample size of this study, we concluded that a high reliability test of PE max or PI max are achieved using 2 measurement days with more than 3 trials each after a successful familiarization session.
