The aim of this study is to understand the vegetation types and species adaptations from 1987 to 1998 in She-ting area, which was established as a restoration site for Taiwan sika deer (Cervus nippon taiouanus). To evaluate the environmental effects on the grassland vegetation changes of this area, 10 environment factors were observed within 75 stands. The major gradients of the community variation between two different period were determined by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). It was found that the degree of succession is the most significant factor affecting those variations. Classification of the vegetation types was conducted by the two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) method on the basis of the primary data matrix of the two periods. The results show that the different vegetation types can be classified as Imperata cylindrica vegetation type and Senna tora vegetation type. The degree of succession of each vegetation type was larger than that of the last period (viz 1987). It indicates that the biomass of this area is gradually increasing. The rate of succession was calculated as + 4.2, which was obtained by comparing the degrees of succession of the two different time periods. From the successive series of the vegetation types, we can conclude that the vegetation in She-ting area is at a progressive succession. yang sheng zehn 楊 勝 任 2000 學位論文 ; thesis 106 zh-TW
