However, traditional channel assignment schemes, which are originally designed for voice services, make poor flexibility and bandwidth inefficiency on data services. In this paper, we proposed a new channel assignment scheme on the GPRS system architecture to support both voice services and data services. We employed a prediction-based channel reservation scheme to decrease data packet queuing delay. Together with this channel reservation scheme, we proposed a call admission control scheme and a guideline to select appropriate carrier and channels to satisfy users’ requirements. According to individual traffic service class, the call admission control scheme in our proposed algorithm will decide whether a new call or a handoff call should be admitted or rejected, which is based on not only the current traffic condition but also the nearest future traffic prediction. It is shown through the simulation results that the proposed scheme outperforms other schemes on the handoff call dropping probability.
