The study was a correlative research using structured questionnaires and face-to-face interview. Purpose samples were 113 of inpatients with mood disorder including 59 manic patients and 54 severe depressive patients from two psychiatric hospital in Taipei. Questionnaires used in the study included : 1. The demographic variables of the mood disorder patients. 2. The Need of Psychiatric Inpatient Scale. 3. Psychiatric Service Satisfaction Scale. Collected samples were descriptively and inferentially analyzed using SPSS 8.0 statistical program. The results of this study were obtained: 1. Factor analysis indicated that The Need of Psychiatric Inpatient Scale could be induced in three factors: adjustment to illness, professional information, and emotional support. The need of psychiatric inpatient was high, since the each item mean was 3.29, especially “adjustment to illness” was the highest for the two major diagnostic patients. 2. Factor analysis indicated that Psychiatric Service Satisfaction Scale could be induced in five factors: ward care, service attitude, other ward staff service, activity and living arrangements, and autonomy. The overall satisfaction of psychiatric service was medial, since each item mean was 2.74. The highest satisfaction of the manic patients was “activity and living arrangements” and the severe depressive patients was “service attitude”, while the lowest satisfaction was “autonomy” of the two major diagnostic patients. 3. No significance was shown between the demographic variables and the need of manic inpatients. Variables of patients, including the will of admission, marriage, and onset of the disease, were associated with the need of the severe depressive inpatients. 4. Variables of the manic inpatients, including the will of admission, education, and hospital, were associated with the satisfaction of the psychiatric service. Variables of the severe depressive inpatients, including age, marriage, religion, and onset of the disease, were associated with the satisfaction of the psychiatric service. 5. No significance was shown between the need of inpatients and patient satisfaction of the two major diagnostic patients. 6. The important related variable of psychiatric service satisfaction of the manic inpatients was the will of admission. The variable could explain 9.1﹪ of the total variance. The important related variable of psychiatric service satisfaction of the severe depressive inpatients was education. The variable could explain 17.4﹪ of the total variance. These results could help nurses understanding the need of psychiatric inpatients and the related factors of satisfaction toward psychiatric service. It could be as a reference and a guideline for quality control of medical care, nursing objective, and evaluation of nursing intervention. These would probably improve the quality of medical care, and could be as a reference for nursing education, clinical nursing , and future related nursing research.
