碩士 === 東海大學 === 建築學系 === 88 === The Extension Design for the National Palace Museum Abstract The topic of this thesis is the extension design for the National Palace Museum. Main points are: 1.The problem of connecting new form with old one. 2.How does a national museum, being a memorial use, make a proper spatial adjustment when facing the trend of leisurization and multi-display of museums all over the world? 3.How to make a more reasonable readjustment for originally imperfect layout in the museum by means of new extension? The whole contents are divided into five chapters, making an overall explication from the background of the National Palace Museum, to the evolution of the building type of museum, to the investigation into the particularities of the site and into the spatial use, to the evaluation of fixed quantity and quality of extension space, and to the development of the design. Chapter 1. Explaining the issues of the design and possible developing directions from several subjective or objective conditions, such as the motives of the design, the viewpoints on the site, the attitude of the National Palace Museum itself, and the developing trend of the museum. By case study, understanding the methods and policies that other famous architects in the world will take when facing similar conditions, and taking them as basic thoughts of emulating and learning. Chapter 2. Doing a synthetic analysis on the surroundings near the site, current facilities, each system and the quality of the landscapes; putting forward basic opinions to help on the design. Chapter 3. Raising and analyzing current problems existing in the old building for the purpose of consulting and improving when designing. Chapter 4. Explicating the quantity and quality of each kind of designed space by making a list. Chapter 5. The process and result of the design.
