Description
Summary:碩士 === 淡江大學 === 教育資料科學學系 === 88 === The thesis aims at exploring the effect of the class, “Library User Education,” which is the required course for the freshmen at Providence. The main points for exploration are as follows: a)The undergraduates’ previous experiences of visiting libraries. b)The ways the students manage to look for information. c)The students’ views about the content of the course. d)To know if the students were satisfied with the equipment used in class or for personal study. e)To see if the students understood the course’s content. f)To know if the students accepted the lecture of the teacher. g)The students’ views after finishing the course. h)The students’ evaluation of their ability to use the various sources of the library. i)The librarians’ and teachers’ comments on the effects of the class. The investigation was made through three ways: questionnaire, test, and interview. There are two groups of participants, students and teachers. 324 students out of the sophomores of the 5 departments of the Management were chosen by chance for the research, and 50 of them were given an in-depth interview. Also, 3 teachers who are teaching the course currently and 3 librarians were interviewed. The analysis and the calculation of the data were made with the Excel 7.0 for Windows 98. The following are the conclusions: a)Basically, the students knew few about the using of the library before they came to university. Further library education is needed. b)According to the investigation on the sophomores, the students are now able to acquire information through the various ways they learned in class. c)Their views about the course, “Library User Education,” can be divided into 12 parts. Most students thought that the teaching materials could be understood without difficulty and the content was full and diverse. The class was well accepted. d)The students were satisfied with the apparatus used in class, but they complained about the small amount of the computers available to them. e)The average grade that the students gained from the test on their knowledge about the library usage was 76 that shows that they have learned quite a lot from the class. f)The students agreed on the teaching of the teachers that inspired their interest in learning and led them to further questioning and discussion. They felt satisfied with the teachers’ ways of expression. The teachers were found to follow their syllabus and gave fair evaluation, which means that their teaching was well accepted. g)The students believed that they benefited from the class a lot. h)The students found that it is obvious that they are more capable to use the various sources of the library. i)For the librarians, the main effects of the class are to help more student use the library and to increase the interaction between students and librarians. As for the teachers, students are effectively applying what they learned from the class. Some suggestions may be considered: a)To encourage other schools to offer the class, “Library User Education.” b)To add more computers and other relevant equipment. c)To change the way of testing. d)To offer a regular classroom. e)To set up a classroom equipped with the advanced electronic medium. f)To reduce or combine some homework. g)To offer a class schedule which make students learn more efficiently from different classes. Some ideas for the further research are listed: a)To broaden the range of the research. b)To increase the depth of the research.
