碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 外國語文研究所 === 89 === Abstract In this thesis, I propose to examine the world of Jody Tiflin and his growth. Various experiences with men and animals contribute to the boy’s gradual maturity. In Chapter One, the investigation of the seasonal pattern of the cyclic story will help one to understand The Red Pony. The whole story of Jody Tiflin will make things clear in dealing with the process of his growth. In Chapter Two, aside from the study of Steinbeck’s writing techniques that weave the theme and the imagery together, I suggest to read The Red Pony as a whole story of a boy’s education and his role as an expected quester. In Chapter Three, I shall examine the relationship of men and horses and how it brings about Jody’s growth. In Chapter Four, I shall analyze human relations and views of several characters that have different influences on Jody. Each chapter can be read as an autonomous part, and they all center on the protagonist with an integral theme of growth. From Jody’s relationship with the red pony, his compassion for Gitano, and his love for the colt, he finally has had a mellow relationship with his folks and friends. Thus, he has emerged as the leader of the people to complement his grandfather.
