In a multilayered transmission line circuit, the regions with simple media and simple geometries (such as stratified homogeneous layers) are first analyzed by method of lines. Finite element method is then used to investigate the complex regions (such as inhomogeneous layers and conductors with arbitrary cross sections) in the circuit. The boundary conditions involved in finite element analysis are obtained from the solutions of method of lines. The finite element analysis, thus the two-dimensional division, is employed only in parts of the domain to be analyzed, while other parts are divided in one-dimensional following the analysis of method of lines. This analysis would then be more efficient than the traditional finite element analysis, in which the two-dimensional division is adopter in the whole solution domain. Also, this analysis would be capable of handing the complex circuits those may be difficult for the method of lines. Using this analysis, several complex multilayered transmission line circuits, such as those with arbitrary metallization cross sections, and those having finite width substrates with arbitrary cross sections, will be analyzed.
