description 碩士 === 高雄醫學大學 === 口腔衛生科學研究所 === 89 === ABSTRACT The study discusses the practices of smoking, alcohol drinking and betel quid chewing among aboriginal junior high school students in Pingtong County, in order to understand their knowledge of these behaviors and their attitude, and personality related to the use of these substances. It also studies the distribution of the users, the connection, the differences and the prediction of the behaviors, and therefore to help promote the mental and physical well being among the native tribes and to prolong their average life expectancy. The objects of the study are those currently enrolled students in Tai Wu, Lai Yi and Ma Chia Junior High Schools, Pingtong County, by using and open-question questionnaire. There are 576 valid surveys returned and they are concluded in the following findings: 1. The prevalence ratios of smoking, alcohol drinking and betel quid chewing among aboriginal junior high school students are 16.3%, 13.2% and 9.6% respectively. 2. As for the socially related people of these users, it is found that these practices are also prevailing among their parents, brothers and grandparents. 3. Common modes to the practices. One likes to use these substances “when one feels bored” and “blue”. The behaviors occur mostly “at classmates’ or friends’ home” and “at one’s own home”, usually “with classmates or friends”. The get these substances “at grocery stores” or “from classmates or friends”. The usually use the substances “when they have no school”. Most of them have used “less than a year”, first time “in their fifth and sixth grades”, at “classmates’ or friends’ home” and “one’s own home”. Most of them smoke “less than 5 cigarettes”, drink “1-2 glasses” of liquor, and chew “less than 5 betel quid” per week. 4. For all objects of this study, they do not have much knowledge about smoking, alcohol drinking and betel quid chewing. Their attitude is prone to non-agreeable to the practices. Their personality is neutral and controlled from inside. 5. For the variables affecting the objects’ practices of smoking, alcohol drinking and betel quid chewing (knowledge, attitude and behavior). Only attitude indicates a distinct correlation. 6. The objects’ knowledge of smoking, alcohol drinking, betel quid chewing has a positive correlation with their outside controlled personality. 7. There are 7 valid predicted features of an aboriginal junior high student who is likely to smoke, drink and betel quid chewing: male, in his third year of junior high, grade ranking 1/3 from the bottom, with only senior high school diploma at the end, parents’ education level senior high school or above parents unsatisfied with their school performance, and with pocket money every day. 8. This study finds that mothers play and important part in the surveyed students’ behavior of smoking. This finding is remarkable to future studies related to aboriginal junior high students’ use of cigarettes. (Pai Wan Tribe is maternal society.) In addition, the study shows high ratio of using cigarettes, liquor and betel nuts by the objects in their fifth and sixth grades (about 42%). Those students smoke, drink or chew those substances mostly at their homes or the homes of their friends or classmates. Therefore, the preventive education should start at their third and fourth grades. The places and facilities for their proper activities at leisure time should also be provided. 9. The list below shows the factors affecting the objects’ behaviors and knowledge of and attitude toward smoking, alcohol drinking and betel quid chewing.
