The interaction may be influenced by the IS development phases and such environmental factors as project characteristic, development tool/method used, and organizational environment. The study attempts to integrate these factors with the interactive behaviors of developers during IS development, and examine the related development performances. This study has three purposes: (1) To find out various interaction patterns among developers during IS development. (2) To explore the orientations of these patterns and their impacts on development performances in terms of development phases. (3) To examine the effects of project environments on the orientations of the patterns and the corresponding system development performances. Purpose (1) is accomplished by case-study approach, while purpose (2) and (3) are by questionnaire survey and statistical method. The results are as follows: (1) The case-study identifies fourteen interaction patterns. Seven of them are “people-oriented”, including encouragement and consideration, respecting others, experience sharing, social activities, team collaboration, communication and coordination, and supporting others. Three are “task-oriented”, including norm orientation, user orientation and specialization orientation. The rest are “self-oriented”. These are working alone, insisting on self-opinion, selfishness, and no sense of responsibility. (2) A factor analysis further groups the seven “people-oriented” patterns into two orientations of individual coordination and group coordination. (3) Project characteristic, development tool/method used, and organization structure may affect the interactions. Among them, the effect of “development tool/method used” is notably significant. (4) In the analysis of system development performance, it appears that group coordination in the first development phase, task orientation in the second and individual coordination in the third, all have a significant overall effect on the system development performance. The correlation analyses also show that people- and task-oriented interaction patterns are positively correlated to both member satisfaction and task accomplishment, while self-oriented pattern is negatively correlated to them. Furthermore, it appears that simple project, standardized tool / method, or decentralized / flexible organization structure may help increase system development performance.
