Twenty female basketball players (age:16.4±3.5year; basketball experience:3.5±1.6year) were randomly assigned to (A)speed and agility training group, (B)circuit training group and (C)control group. In spite of regular basketball training, speed and agility training or circuit training were applied to either group two times a week. Body composition, general and specific physical fitness were tested before and after eight weeks of training to evaluated the training effect. The results of this study were as follows: 1. In the speed and agility training group, the percent body fat, fat weight, fat free weight and sum of skinfolds were significantly decreased after eight weeks of training (p<.05); squat, vertical jump, 10m shuttle run, 30m dash for general physical fitness, and throw and SEMO agility test for specific physical fitness were significantly improved (p<.05). 2. In the circuit training group, the percent body fat, fat weight, fat free weight, sum of skinfolds, waist circumference, forearm circumference for body composition were significantly decreased (p<.05); squat, sit-ups, 30m dash, sit-and-reach for general physical fitness and SEMO agility test for specific physical fitness were significantly improved (p<.05). 3. In the control group, the sum of skinfolds was significantly decreased (p<.05); squat, sit-and-reach for general physical fitness were significantly improved (p<.05). 4. Speed and agility group the vertical jump, 30m dash for general physical fitness; throw and SEMO agility test for specific physical fitness were significantly better than control group (p<.05). In conclusion, it is necessary to combine the physical fitness training with regular basketball training. In addition, both speed and agility training, and circuit training are capable of improving general physical fitness for basketball players; and speed and agility training significantly contribute training effect of specific physical fitness.
