This study is for understanding how teachers, parents and children interpret picture book of “The Giving Tree” written by Shel Silverstein about the theme, character, plot, language and illustration in primary school. After the reading, teachers, parents and children have an interview with researcher to talk their feeling about the story. Information was then collected, and data analysis was based on qualitative method.
The major findings of this study are as following:
First, teachers, parents and children interpret seven themes about “parent-child relation’’, “nature-human relation”, “love” , “thanksgiving”, “contentment”, “help” and “friendship” .
Second, this research finds four points about character:
1 . Teachers, parents and children interpret two opposite characteristic according to behavior and dialogue of the character.
2. Teachers and parents’ responses of the role in the story are connected with the imagination of their life experience ; childrens’ responses are connected with their personal emotion.
3. Teachers and parents tend to approve the author’s arrangement of sex-role in this story.
4.Children like variety of the characters.
Third, this research find five points about plot:
1.Most teachers, parents and children have different point about each sentence “Tree is happy” in the story.
2.Teachers and parents have deep impression on last plot; however, children have deep impression on first plot.
3.Teachers and parents have more enlightenment about the plot.
4.Some parents think that the story may misguide children.
5.Most teachers, parents and children hope that the story should have happy ending.
Forth, this research find three points about language:
1. Most teachers, parents and children think that the language of “The Giving Tree” is simple.
2.Less children can’t understand some sentence in the story.
3.Some parents notice the correction of the punctuation mark.
Finally, this research find three points about illustration:
1. Most teachers, parents and children think that the pictures relate to the context.
2.Children show different point of views in color of the illustration.
3. Teachers and parents usually neglect the illustration of the story.
According to the result of this research, we have some suggestions to teachers who teach storybooks, parents who read storybooks with their children , authors who create the storybooks, and we also have some suggestions for further researchers
