Currently many researchers have proposed reliable multicast services in a combination of fixed and mobile hosts networks. In mobile ad hoc networks, there are no solutions to the problem of acknowledgements (ACKs) implosion at present. In this thesis, we propose a Token-Ring Multicast Mechanism (TRMM) to solve the acknowledgements (ACKs) implosion problem in mobile ad hoc networks. We use token-ring to logically divide the network into a two-level hierarchy in order to reduce the message overhead of network management. In ring-based routing, neighboring nodes form rings and select a ring head. The ring head has the responsibility of routing packets to nodes outside the ring and collecting the acknowledgements from ring members. It is easy to see that a ring here serves a very fundamental goal of maintaining routes and solving acknowledgment (ACK) implosion problem. We also conduct a simulation to evaluate the performance of TRMM. The results demonstrate that TRMM has better performance than the direct approaches.
