The subjects were parturient women with normal spontaneous delivery from a regional teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. A total of 127 women in labor were randomly assigned to the experimental group ,control groupⅠand control groupⅡ. The experimental group of 43 subjects received acupressure during the first stage of labor, the control groupⅠof 42 subjects received skin effleurage on upper arm, and the control groupⅡof 42 subjects received routine hospital care only. All of the subjects were received the same routine nursing care. The intensity of pain perception and uterine contraction among the three groups were compared in the latent phase, active phase and transitional phase. The instrument for data collection included personal and obstetrical questionnaire, Visual Analogue Scale for pain, fetal monitor, and face to face interview in 1-2 hours after delivery. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, non-parametic statistics, and one way ANOVA. The results of the study reveal that: The experimental group had significantly lower intensity in pain perception in the latent phase and active phase than control groupⅠand control groupⅡ,but not in transitional phase. The differences on the intensity of uterine contraction between pre- and post-treatment showed no significant difference among three groups; however, the duration of the first stage of labor was significantly shorter for the experimental group than the other two groups. Ninety-one percent of the women in the experimental group reported that acupressure was helpful and provided a great mental support during labor. Based on the research findings, to use complementary therapies such as acupressure on labor women is recommended in nursing practice for a high quality of nursing and obstetric care. For future research on the effects of acupressure on parturient women should tested using objective methods and need to develop other acupoints in the treatment procedure. Key words:acupressure, parturient women, labor pain, uterine contraction, first stage of labor 鍾聿琳 林昭庚 張春桃 2001 學位論文 ; thesis 84 zh-TW
